While the thought of a live-aboard 90 footer is nice, we’re not billionaires. Besides, the best spots to chase gamefish are usually in close proximity to world-class resorts or at least 5 star accommodations. So we will limit our search to 45 to 65 footers. If you have a question or need advice they usually have the answer based on their own experience in the field. While this is common among production builders, they lose some points for this in our opinion. They have grown beyond the delamination issues of the early days. Now their rigorous construction process delivers a vessel that inspires confidence. While not known for an exceptional ride, they will get you there and back even in the most challenging offshore conditions.

Release Boatworks stands tall as an exemplary manufacturer of mid-size sportfishermen. They began life in Miami and a few years ago moved to their current location in the New Jersey boat building town of Egg Harbor (no relation to the Ira Trocki owned Egg Harbor Yachts). Their style gives a nod toward the Florida builders of old. In fact they freely admit to their purposely identical hull sides of a 43’ Merritt. Unlike the other builders listed here, their largest build to date is a 55’ flybridge walk around. In fact they definitely own bragging rights for the top walk around model as it is clearly their specialty. We can see the benefits of their design, particularly in that mid forty range and while walk arounds are their specialty they shine on every design they put out.

Hull Material: Release uses the vacuum infusion method to build their fully composite boats. As a result their boats are stronger and lighter, the end result being improved efficiency and superior performance. Their construction method delivers a high-quality hull that also features a clean wake while on the troll. This helps them earn a top rating as well as their move away from wood coring.

Cost vs. Value: Their moderate volume production and advanced construction techniques should contribute to a high cost. However, Release claims their goal is to be priced at the same level as the production builders while building at the custom boat level. Their construction methods alone would enable them to charge a premium. However, favorable they’re pricing can’t be ignored and we expect it won’t last forever.

Their interior layouts are well designed using teak or cherry wood, as you would expect from a builder at this level. If talking pound for pound, Release Boatworks is ahead of just about any builder we have reviewed.

If you happen to go there, which they encourage, Atlantic City is about twenty minutes away, and you will likely find yourself talking boats and fishing at lunch with the founder, Jim Turner.

Mike Rybovich actually hand selects the mahogany planks used in their hulls. Their hulls run like a Rolls Royce, stately and comfortable in every condition. All this equates to more time and cost to own a Rybovich This of course negatively affects the score here.

Cost vs. Value: Yes, this brand is at the upper limits of the cost scale and you have to get in line to get one. Most of their new builds go to previous owners looking to move to a bigger boat. When you build a Rybovich you are building an instant classic. They even have a book about them. Again, they’re price is high and build time is measured in years not months – but so is their wait list. But we would argue that you can’t put a price on a work of art. Despite their dedication to perfection, or perhaps because of it, high cost and extreme build times negatively impacts their score.

Fit and Finish: We could argue that every Rybovich is a masterpiece. Museum quality is a term that comes to mind. Once again, this level of fit and finish comes at a price, not just financially but extended build time as well. If Mr. Rybovich doesn’t like the way his cabinetry looks, he rips it out and starts over, increasing the cost and build time. However, you will not find a better fit and finish anywhere. We’re still taking a half point off for the time and cost.

Yes, you will have to go to Palm Beach often. But c’mon, it’s Palm Beach!
